Many of us remember the oil shortages of the late seventies. They caused more than just the inconvenience of occasional gasoline rationing. Several elderly people actually died in the New York City area because of a lack of heating oil. Some people thought it would only get worse, and we would run out of oil completely before long.
Interestingly, at the same time, gold and other things much rarer than oil were available to anyone who wanted them. This gives us a clue to what causes an oil shortage, or any other shortage. It is usually just one thing.

- Local Government Apathy - An International Problem

Local government apathy is not just a problem in the USA. It is an international problem. A Google of "local political apathy" proves that very quickly. The problem has also been with us for some time. In 1987 Mayor Ken Livingstone of London wrote a book, "If Voting Changed Anything, They'D Abolish It."
Since 2004 something called The Power inquiry has been investigating the condition of democracy in Britain. This group hosted meetings and heard from a variety of interest groups over the past two years. This investigation attempted to answer the questions:

- Why The U.S. Should Help Illegal Mexican Immigrants

I am Christian, Conservative, and Republican. Having said that, let me say that we are committing a great injustice in how we are dealing with Mexican immigration and the status of illegal Mexican workers in the United States. Congress ought to support President Bush's guest-worker program for illegal Mexican workers in the United States. We do owe something to Mexico and its people.
In the 19th century our nation, which was experiencing great industrial, technological and economic growth, sought to expand to the Pacific Ocean. But, there was one big problem. Mexico was in the way. Western land belonged to Mexico.

- US Army to Probe Pat Tillman's Death

When Arizona Cardinal's defensive back Pat Tillman walked away from a multimillion dollar football contract to join the Army, America was shocked. When he was killed in action, America mourned, and when, a week after his nationally televised funeral, the Army announced that his death was "probably" the result of friendly fire, America was outraged.
Almost 2 years after his death on April 22, 2004, the Army has ordered a criminal investigation on the matter. Whether or not they are investigating the actions of one individual or a group remains to be seen. An army official has stated that the probe will seek to determine whether negligent homicide or some other criminal activity was committed on the night of Tillman's death.
