  • The History of The Electric Guitar: How Music Was Changed Forever
     by: Bob Martin
In The Beginning.... The guitar's soft melodic tone made it difficult for people to hear it when being played alongside other instruments. So during the 1930's an inventive individual decided to change that and invented the first electric guitar. Little did he know, or have imagined way back then how the invention of the electric guitar would significantly affect the course of 20th century music. Like most new things, the electric guitar had its critics but it quickly won people over because of its ability to allow musicians to play much more creatively and express their own individual styles.

  • Music and Technology - A Perfect Mix
     by: Jane Karwoski
To many people, listening to their favorite music as they go about business is a necessity. To others, it is simply a diversion as they go about the boring day-to-day chores we have in life. For some, it is a sensual experience and a form of creative self-expression, whether as an active participant or merely an avid listener.

  • Artist Managers and Booking Agents
     by: Tom W. Gauger
As a former talent booking agent with the William Morris Agency, I am always amazed at either the scope and talent of an artist's business team or the why and how an artist exists within the mediocre framework which they are operating from. And believe me, I've seen plenty of both. It would seem that many managers fall into these positions, like in many fields, not out of genuine talent or know-how, but by mere presence alone – They were friends of the artist or a brother to one of the members of the act and so forth. If a manager, important at every turn of an artist's career, is so important, than what exactly is it that makes up a good manager or booking agent?

  • How To Make Your Movie Sound Like A Real Movie
     by: Sam Longoria
I get a lot of questions on if I can "do" sound sweetening, usually by frantic filmmakers, calling in the middle of the night. They are frantic because the sound in their movie or video is bad. They've used a cheap mic, plugged into the camera, or worse, have used the on-camera mic. They had a friend aimlessly point the mic at the floor, or the sky, anywhere but at the actor muttering his lines, and moved the mic randomly during shooting.

  • SORRY, You Are Way Off If You Think an Independent Record Label Can't Be Super Profitable!!!
     by: Ty Cohen
Independent records labels are usually more profitable for the owner of the label than being allied with a major label because the artist gets to keep 100% of the profit. So if money is the only measure of profitably, independence puts more money in the artist's pocket. But if you are part of a new genre of music, you will probably need the big boys to make your genre become popular enough to command a world wide audience. Take rap music as an example. Without the backing of the big record labels, rap would still be basically a local phenomenon. The support that the major record labels gave to rap artists is the reason it has become so successful.

  • Why Do My Burned CDs Not Play In My CD Player?
     by: Jason Cole
So you just burned a mix CD of your favorite tunes for a road trip you and your friends are going on. You play the disc back on your computer, everything works like a charm. You might have even tried playing it back on your new home stereo, and just like on your computer, it plays fine. You head out, pop the CD into your car stereo you bought in 1998, and………nothing. The disc just spins and you get no playback. I've had this happen to me on numerous occasions. And have always wondered, why does my CD play on some players yet not on others? There are a few different things that factor into this.

  • The 6 Rules Of Commercial Music Success
     by: Gian Fiero
Over the years I have had many conversations with music artists about commercial music, which usually leads to them disclosing their disdain and hatred of it. Some refer to Pop music (Pop, as in what's popular now) as commercial music. Others think of anything that is receiving heavy rotation on radio as commercial music. Whatever their definition, one thing is often overlooked: commercial music is the heart of the music industry which pumps the blood that keeps it alive. So why then are so many music artists resistant to making commercial music? The answer that I'm often given is because they don't want to "sell-out" their creative integrity by conforming to some industry version of what's popular (i.e. what's selling at the moment). It becomes very obvious to me that the problem is not commercial music, but rather the perception and definition of it.

  • Play Piano - Preparing to Practice
     by: Ronald Worthy
When the practicing "blahs" strike, you just need an attitude adjustment. You don't have to sweat blood to practice well. You don't even have to think of it as work, or duty, or even something that you ought to do.
Stop a minute and think about it. You like music, and you want to play some special piece that really means something to you. You want it to sound through you - right through your fingertips.
Okay? Well, you practice it to fulfill that desire, not to frustrate it.
Pause here and ask yourself some questions:

  • 7 Tips for Effective Musical Practice
     by: Kevin Sinclair
The quality of your practice is much more important than the quantity. The old saying "practice makes perfect" is only true if the practice itself is perfect. Here are 7 tips to help make your practice more effective and efficient.
    Practice motions slowly
The muscular memory of our bodies allows us to physically carry out patterns of motion with little or no conscious involvement. Examples of muscular memory include walking, riding a bicycle, typing, and of course playing a musical instrument.
In order to develop this memory, the muscles require training in the form of repeated conscious guidance from the mind. First the mind must learn the pattern. Then the mind must "teach" the pattern to the muscles.

  • What Do I Do After Film School?
     by: Paul Kyriazi
I get this question a lot and have a serious opinion about it:
The most important thing is to always keep your shingle hanging out, saying "I am a freelance director." Never say, "Ah I gave that up." Even if you have other jobs, never tear up your business card.
Keep contact with all active filmmakers from college. Work on their films. It's a business of showing up. Show up to shoots, in any capacity. Show up enough and do a good job, and be an ambassador of good will, and you have a good chance on being invited to work on other films.
